A 6 person tent

Best 6 Person Tents In Australia In 2024

Pros
  • Instant tent design that's very easy to set up
  • Generous interior space with loads of extra storage
  • Tough PVC puncture-resistant flooring
  • Ample awning space to relax out of the sun
  • DarkRoom technology to block sunlight
Cons
  • The awning doesn't work well in rain or bad weather

With the Coleman Northstar Instant Up 6, you will benefit from innovative technology and a selection of unique features.

For one, it comes complete with DarkRoom technology, which is designed to block up to 95% of sunlight. This also acts as an insulator, keeping the inside of your tent cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

At the same time, you will benefit from a fast, streamlined setup process. There are loads of windows with mesh to keep the bugs out, and the interior size is generous, to say the least.

I also love the neat awning, which is designed to provide a large amount of shade at the front of your tent. It's very easy to set up and pull down. But on the downside, the awning doesn't go well in rain or bad weather.

Other noteworthy features include the PVC bucket floor, a number of storage pouches, durable ripstop material, and a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.

Want to buy a tent for your family so you can take them camping? But not sure where to start?

To help you out, I've used my extensive camping experience to put together a list of the best 6-person tents in Australia.

You only have one chance at buying the perfect tent, so it's important to get it right! Finding the right mix of comfort, space, and durability is super difficult, and your camping experience just won't be the same if you make a poor choice.

Keep reading to find out exactly which tents I recommend considering for camping in Australia's tough conditions.

How I Made My Selections

I'm an avid traveller, and I've camped across Australia and the world. During my adventures, I've had some amazing experiences. But I've also had some very average ones because I've been using the wrong gear.

In light of this, I've learned exactly what makes the perfect model of tent for hiking, camping with the family, and virtually every other use.

The perfect 6-person tent should be affordable, durable, easy to set up, spacious, and have plenty of ventilation. Each of the 7 options I've listed below performs excellently in these areas.

My Winner
Pros
  • Very competitively priced
  • Excellent ventilation throughout
  • A great range of features including an internal wall
  • No-See-Um mesh walls for extra privacy
  • Designed for Australian weather conditions
Cons
  • A little slow to set up and take down
  • Quite small compared to some alternatives

If you're looking for a budget 6-person tent that offers excellent protection from the weather and ample features, you just can't look past the Outdoor Connection Somerset Dome Tent. Although it's a little heavier and much slower to set up than the Coleman Northstar Instant Up, it presents an excellent balance of value and integrated features.

For example, the two-room design provides plenty of space for storage and sleeping. The No-See-Um mesh screens help let light in while preventing outsiders from seeing into your tent.

What's more, it's fully waterproof with plenty of ventilation thanks to the large windows. The built-in pole sleeves make setup very easy, if a little slow. And last but not least, it comes in at a lightweight 10.3kgs, making it one of the most compact options on this list.

Best Lightweight 6-Person Tent for Hiking
My Winner
Pros
  • An excellent lightweight option
  • Very easy to set up with a single-pole design
  • Very cheap compared to most other 6-person tents
  • Decent height in the middle of the tent
  • Tough polyethylene floor
Cons
  • Limited ventilation options
  • Notable lack of privacy

The Malamoo Teepee 6 is a bare-bones tent that's designed to be as lightweight and simple as possible. At just 6.75kgs, it's one of the most lightweight tents of its type on the market, making it compact enough for hiking or cycling.

On the downside, this tent's basic design means that it lacks privacy and extra ventilation beyond just a couple of roof vents. It's also not the best choice for heavy winds, although it should stand up to most weather conditions without a problem.

  • Not great at blocking light

The Zempire Aero Pro features a unique poleless blowup design. It comes with a double-action pump, enabling you to inflate the tent in just minutes.

Inside, you will find room for a queen size bed, along with ample space for comfortable nights for the whole family. Additional features include roof skylights, an optional awning, and an internal zip-out divider.

  • Generous living spaces
  • Access through front and back doors
  • Rapid setup taking just a few minutes
  • Optional awning walls for more outdoor space
Cons
  • Slightly flimsy design can flap in the wind

This tent is the perfect option for family camping trips. Boasting rapid assembly and pack up, it includes a spacious inside and a lightweight 17kg design.

It's built with high-quality materials, including a rain fly with excellent water resistance. The built-in mesh screens provide insect protection, and you will even have the option of connecting 2 Darch Kozi tents with a Tent Tunnel for huge floor space.

A Good Choice for Occasional Use
My Winner
Pros
  • Takes a short time to set up
  • Mesh windows for extra ventilation
  • Low weight for easy transportation
  • A good option for warm weather
  • A great budget-friendly simple dome tent
Cons
  • Quite cramped with six adults
  • Doesn't cope well with strong winds

This budget option is great for a short trip, but I wouldn't recommend it for longer adventures. It comes with the bare basics, which means that it doesn't take much time to set up and pack down. However, there are few advanced extras.

The front screen shelter is attractive, but the low roof heights will annoy some people. But at least the durable Polyguard fabric is designed to last under Australia's harsh conditions, so this tent could be an excellent long-term investment.

  • Compatible with optional lighting add-ons
  • Stands up well to heavy rain
  • Makes the perfect shelter for those needing extra space

Cons

  • Fibreglass poles are reportedly prone to snapping

Kathmandu is one of the world's leading outdoor brands, and they've really outdone themselves with this 6-person waterproof tent. The only thing stopping it from gaining a position at the top of my list is its slightly high price.

It boasts a seam-sealed flysheet, a breathable inner, and controllable internal vents to help you maintain a comfortable temperature. It doesn't have inbuilt LED night lights, but these are available as an optional add-on.

6 Person Tent Buying Guide

Here, I've expanded on a few of the most important factors to consider when selecting the best 6-person tent for your family.

Quality and Durability

Australian conditions are some of the harshest on the planet, and you need to make sure your tent material can stand up to strong wind, high temperatures, and constant UV exposure.

Space and Height

A spacious tent is always nice, and you need to ensure you get something with enough space for you and your family, your pets, and any gear you need to store inside. If there's four of you and a couple of dogs, you might want to consider an 8-person tent.

Ease of Setup

Some tents - think instant up tents and inflatable models - take just minutes to set up. Others can take half an hour or longer. If you're not willing to spend this sort of time, I'd definitely recommend looking at instant up tents.

Cost

The 7 tents I've listed here range from $259.90 to $1699. Sure, the more expensive options come with more room and a more extensive range of features, but you need to set a budget and stick to it to ensure you don't spend more than you want to.

Additional Features

Some tents come with very limited features and offer a simple shell for you to shelter and sleep in. Others come with things like internal doors, storage pockets, inbuilt mesh pockets, double entry doors, and an entry door porch.

Summary

The best 6-person tent on the market today is the Coleman Northstar Instant Up 6. It's very easy to set up, affordable, and boasts a range of great features. It's more than comfortable enough to use for extended periods of time should you need to.

The Outdoor Connection Somerset Dome Tent is my favourite choice for those on a tight budget, although many of the other options on this list come in at very affordable prices as well.

At the end of the day, you need to decide how much you want to spend and what features you require before selecting the best 6-person tent. The options on this list are all excellent, and I'm confident that you will find something that you will love.
